Michael Smithart is a 1992 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Troy State University with a degree in Social Science Secondary Education. While at Troy, Mr. Smithart was awarded the prestigious Leonard Y. Trapp Memorial Award which recognizes the graduate with the most promising future in the field of education. Mr. Smithart also both a Master’s degree and an Education Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Troy University-Dothan.
Mr. Smithart began his career in the Butler County School system as a teacher/coach at McKenzie High School. After five years, he moved to Opp, Al to teach and coach football and basketball at Opp High School. In 2004, he was named Assistant Principal at Opp Middle School. After one year, he was promoted to Principal at Opp Middle School. In 2006, Mr. Smithart was again promoted, this time to the position of Assistant to the Superintendent where his duties cover both the instructional and personnel aspects of the school system.
Mr. Smitahrt is very active in many community service groups such as the Rotary Club of Opp and is an ordained Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Opp where he also serves as an adult Sunday School teacher. He has been married to his wife Stephanie for 14 years. They have daughter Bailey and a son named Hal.
