Dr. Martha Barber
ARI Regional Principal Coach Birmingham Board of Education/SDE
Martha Smith Barber has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of schools, and senior executive director of schools for Birmingham City Schools. In her twenty-five years as an educator, Dr. Barber has made numerous positive impacts. During her principalship, Tuggle Elementary was one of the first schools to be a part of the Alabama Reading Initiative. Tuggle was also named a National Distinguished Title I school by the United States Department of Education as well as a Blue Ribbon School for the State Department of Education. Currently, Dr. Barber is an ARI Principal Coach for the State Department of Education. Her schools have shown positive growth utilizing this process. Dr. Barber is a motivational speaker and regional and national workshop leader and presenter. She serves on the Board of Directors for Gateway, a non-profit organization. She is married to Jesse L. Barber, Jr. They have one daughter, Tara Alesha.
